Advice is only effective when the receiver gets it at the right time. We seem to have a hard time incorporating someone’s advice when it doesn’t apply to our specific situation.

When you’re in the middle of something and you get advice from someone you deem trustworthy, you will look at it and say: “interesting, sounds plausible, maybe I should consider doing X or Y.” At least now the advice will linger in your mind as it is potentially an answer to a question you’re looking to formulate an answer to.

Important: advice from people who call themselves “experts” is never worth it. Go to people who have a track record in what you’re trying to do and listen carefully. (am I giving advice here?)

Acknowledging this pattern helps you to be more aware of advice about the things you are working on. But in the end, the only real way to learn is to do.
